254 SMO® Stainless is an austenitic stainless steel designed for superior pitting and crevice corrosion. 254 SMO® Stainless is ideal for high-chloride environments because of its high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. 254 SMO® Stainless is often used where 316L or 317L has failed. 254 SMO® Stainless is significantly stronger than the common austenitic grades, and it is also characterized by high ductility and impact strength.

254 SMO® Stainless is readily fabricated and welded. 254 SMO® Stainless is a strong, tough stainless steel. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code allows use of 254 SMO® Stainless up to 750°F, with excellent strength levels. Applications for 254 SMO® Stainless include: process equipment in the chemical industry, bleaching equipment in the pulp and paper industry, flue gas cleaning, desalination, seawater handling, and heat exchangers.
